CLASSES
Ballet Technique
If you want to learn to dance, you MUST do ballet! Starting with barre work, students will learn the “basics” and necessities preceding all creative and choreographic elements in the centre (au milieu). Through various enchaînements, skills will be developed to increase strength, coordination, balance, suppleness and poise. Yearly exams are offered to those interested in obtaining certificates of achievement through the CDTA.
Requirements: Sansha Tutu Slippers (Intermediate); Sansha Pro Canvas Ballet Slippers (Senior) in pink; Elastosplits in pink
Tap Technique
The origins of tap dance predate the 1920s, when Vaudeville performers toured extensively from place-to-place entertaining the masses. Students will practice foundational steps and combinations, and will also experience contemporary movements. Yearly exams are offered to those interested in obtaining certificates of achievement through the CDTA.
Requirements: Black patent tap shoes (available in studio); Capezio 650 in beige with teletone taps (custom-ordered)
Pointe Ballet
After an assessment and evaluation of each dancer’s strength and muscle development, students will be invited to join classes in pointe ballet.. Shoes will be fitted by the teacher, and students will be taught how to maintain them.
Requirements: Teacher approval; shoes fitted by teacher
Modern Technique
Based on the choreographic genius of José Límon, students will experience principles of gravity in motion. A MUST for dancers who intend to pursue a career in the performing arts, students are trained to resist, fall and spiral in new and inventive ways.
Requirements: Lyrical or Foot-thongs/undies in suntan/beige; Foot Mittens (available in studio)
Musical Theatre
Based on the musicals of Broadway, students will learn how to project their voices, enact scripts and stage a musical theatre number. For those interested in becoming a triple threat, musical theatre classes strengthen one’s ability to sing, dance and act!
Requirements: Foot Mittens or Jazz Shoes; Character shoes for performances (available in studio)
Jazz Technique
Jazz is based on movements created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. CDTA Syllabus classes will precede optional examinations. Choreography will be created using a variety of stylistic techniques, including traditional, expressive and lyrical.
Requirements: Leather split-sole jazz shoes; Foot Mittens (available in studio)
Hip Hop
The evolved form of street dancing, hip hop provides opportunities for students to refine their physicality using popping, krumping and other related techniques.
Middle Eastern Dance
This class will cover styles from beledi to raks-sharki dance with a focus on Egyptian culture. The basics of isolations, footwork, hip movements and veil work will be taught.
